Mountain top removal, which takes place mostly in central Appalachia, is a radical form of strip mining where 500-800 feet of mountain are blown up so that coal seams as small as 6 inches may be reached. The debris, which contains toxic heavy metals, is dumped into neighboring valleys, burying and poisoning streams, and destroying the ecology beyond repair. Not only is this bad for the environment, but it is also contaminating the drinking water and endangering the lives of the Appalachian people, who have to deal with catastrophic flooding (deemed "Acts of God" by the coal companies), shaken foundations, job loss, and last but not least, flying boulders. All for a little more coal.
